A review of the operational definitions of conflict

A report by QCMHR researcher, Dr Fiona Charlson, reviews the concept of conflict within the context of epidemiological research.

Dr Charlson states, “there is no uniformly accepted definition of armed conflict”. Her report explores the relevance and utility of the numerous operational definitions used in the field of research.

She questions how a researcher might determine which construct is most appropriate for the purpose of public health research, and if the way in which researchers operationalise conflict can influence the outcome of an empirical analysis, “should we be confining ourselves to just one?”
