The Mental Health Services Research stream, led by Dr Sandra Diminic, aims to reduce the population burden of mental illness through applied research to understand the demand for and use of mental health services, evidence-based mental health service models, and how these findings can be used to improve mental health systems. The team works closely with health system partners such as governments, Primary Health Networks, and community organisations to provide evidence and advice to support integrated regional and national mental health service planning.
This program of research is guided by national mental health service planning and reform priorities. The research team’s current primary focus is development and application of the National Mental Health Service Planning Framework (NMHSPF), a needs-based planning tool that models population needs and required packages of care to produce resource targets for optimal mental health service delivery in Australia. We also conduct research drawing on population surveys and health service administrative data to understand current mental health service delivery and identify service gaps for specific regions and populations.
