Global Burden of Disease Study - Mental disorder estimates

Global Burden of Disease Study - Mental disorder estimates

Overview

The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) team at QCMHR are responsible for producing burden of disease estimates for mental disorders in the GBD Study led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington. The GBD study quantifies health loss from over 350 causes across 204 countries and territories by age, sex and year. The team at QCMHR conducts the epidemiological analyses underpinning this work for 11 mental disorders. Their key priorities include improvements to both the precision and scope of burden estimates for mental disorders.

Work is underway to create new methodological frameworks to estimate burden for disorders not currently included in the GBD study, estimate the impact of COVID-19 on the prevalence and burden of mental disorders, estimate severity distributions by health care, and quantify excess-deaths due to mental disorders within the GBD framework. The team also maintains one of the world’s largest databases of epidemiological data for mental disorders. They are actively seeking epidemiolocal data for locations with poor data coverage. This includes established collaborations with research teams conducting new mental health surveys in several countries.
