COVID-19 Forecasting

COVID-19 Forecasting

Overview

The QCMHR Burden of Disease team’s expertise in epidemiological modelling and their ability to work within IHME’s processes and infrastructure earned them an invitation to collaborate on the COVID-19 Forecasting team with the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, University of Washington. The team developed COVID-19 projections to determine the impact of this disease on different health systems around the world. Projections showed daily and cumulative deaths due to COVID-19 by country as well as demand for hospital services, including the availability of ventilators, general hospital beds, and intensive care unit beds.

A systematic and comprehensive effort was needed to identify and maintain the database required for the above modelling processes for any given country. Methods developed as part of this collaboration have informed work the team has undertaken to quantify the impact of COVID-19 on the global prevalence and burden of mental disorders.
