The Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Epidemiology and Services (CAPES) Research Stream
Overview
The Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Epidemiology and Services (CAPES) Research Stream at QCMHR leads work related to the mental health of young people aged under 25 years. The flagship project is National Adolescent Mental Health Surveys (NAMHS), funded by The University of Queensland in America (TUQIA) through a gift from Pivotal Ventures, an investment and incubation company created by Melinda Gates. NAMHS aims to address the lack of mental disorder prevalence data in low- and middle- income countries by conducting nationally-representative surveys of adolescents aged 10-17 years in Kenya, Indonesia, and Vietnam. The pilot study in each site has been completed.
For the national survey, over 6000 adolescents and their parents/primary caregivers will be interviewed in each country to determine the prevalence of six mental disorders. The survey will also measure a range of risk and protective factors, as well as service access and utilisation. In parallel, a clinical calibration will be conducted to assess the performance of the mental disorder measure across different countries and cultural contexts. NAMHS, led by the CAPES team, is conducted in collaboration with Johns Hopkins University in the US, the African Population and Health Research Center in Kenya, Gadjah Mada University in Indonesia, and the Institute of Sociology in Vietnam.
