video Calculating Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs)

This animation was prepared as part of Professor John McGrath’s Niels Bohr Professorship at Aarhus University. It provides an explanation of how to calculate:

  1. Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs),
  2. Years of Life Lost (YLLs),
  3. Years Lived with Disability (YLDs) and
  4. a recently introduced average person-level measure that takes into account the contribution of relevent comorbid disorders to disability, the Health Loss Proportion (HeLP).

Based on Danish health registers, Professor McGrath and team estimate the YLDs and HeLPs associated with mental and substance use disorders. The linked paper (and related material) can be found on the Niels Bohr Professorship website or the NBP Data Resources webpage.
