New research led by Associate Professor Damian Santomauro, found that nearly 1.2 billion people worldwide were living with a mental disorder in 2023, almost double the number in 1990. Mental disorders are now also the leading cause of disability globally, overtaking cancer and cardiovascular disease. The findings highlight the scale of the global mental health challenge, with the burden increasing across all world regions and peaking among young people aged 15 to 19.

The Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research (QCMHR) acknowledges the Jagera, Yuggera, Ugarapul and Turrbal people as the Traditional Owners of the land on which QCMHR operates and their continuing connections to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present and stand together with all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We acknowledge people in our communities with lived experience of mental health, drug and alcohol concerns and those who care for them. We respect and value their generous contributions to our research.
