Randomised controlled trials are considered the gold standard in medical research. In this video Professor McGrath explains how randomisation works to eliminate bias and uncover the truth.


The technique of masking (or blinding) also helps to eliminate bias.


Clinical equipoise means that there is genuine uncertainty in the expert medical community over whether a treatment will be beneficial. Equipoise provides the ethical basis for randomised controlled trials.

The collection of data in clinical trials is done very carefully and very thoroughly. This helps to ensure the quality of the data, which ultimately leads to better treatments.

Therapeutic misconception

Therapeutic misconception occurs when a participant in a clinical trial misunderstands the potential risks and benefits of the trial. Most commonly, participants believe the trial is going to help them get better. In this video Professor McGrath explains therapeutic misconception in more detail.
